This Rochester Founder Is Fixing Cross-Border Payments for Emerging Markets

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — For Chukwuebuka Mgbenka, the idea behind MoneyPigeon did not come from theory, it came from lived experience. As an immigrant navigating financial transactions between the United States and Nigeria, Mgbenka encountered persistent friction when trying to spend money across borders in emerging markets.

Today, as CEO of the Rochester-based fintech startup founded in 2022, he is working to solve that problem by building a platform designed to make cross-border spending more seamless, reliable, and accessible.

Before launching MoneyPigeon, Mgbenka built a strong technical foundation through roles at Bosch and Accenture, where he spent more than a decade as a software developer. At Accenture, he specialized in AI engineering for five years, gaining experience in building scalable systems and working on complex, data-driven solutions.

His career has taken him across multiple cities, including time in Chicago, before ultimately settling in Rochester. That exposure, he said, provided a broader understanding of how different tech ecosystems operate and where opportunities exist.

The inspiration for MoneyPigeon came directly from the gaps he experienced. “Spending in emerging markets like Nigeria. Whether traveling there or trying to pay from abroad it was consistently difficult,” Mgbenka said. “That friction made it clear there was an opportunity to build something better.”

MoneyPigeon is focused on addressing those inefficiencies by creating infrastructure that supports smoother financial transactions in markets that are often underserved by traditional financial systems.

One of the company’s early milestones came through its acceptance into the NextCorps incubator, supported by an M&T Bank scholarship. For Mgbenka, the moment represented more than just access to resources.

It validated our vision,” he said. “And it connected us to a community that is helping accelerate what we’re building.”

He has also gained recognition on a broader stage, finishing as first runner-up in the global Startup Grind pitch competition, an experience that reinforced the importance of clarity and communication in early-stage ventures.

Being able to clearly explain your vision is critical,” Mgbenka said. “And building alongside other founders helps you move faster.

Like many early-stage founders, his focus remains on execution and momentum. The advice that continues to guide him is simple: “Start now, there is no better time than now.”

Mgbenka chose to build MoneyPigeon in Rochester, where he sees a growing opportunity for startups supported by accessible resources and a collaborative ecosystem.

Outside of work, he enjoys exploring the region’s food scene, with local favorites including Thaiyada, Monte Alban, and Esan Bistro. For recreation, he points to Lasertron for laser tag and seasonal trips to Wickham Farms for apple picking. When meeting with other founders, he often heads to Albunn Coffee House.

As MoneyPigeon continues to develop, Mgbenka represents a growing group of founders in Rochester building globally relevant solutions from a regional base leveraging technical expertise, personal experience, and a clear understanding of unmet market needs.
