Resource: Invest NY Ecosystem Dashboard Mapping Upstate New York’s Innovation Economy

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Invest NY Ecosystem Dashboard, an open-access data platform powered by Dealroom, now provides founders, investors, ecosystem builders and economic leaders a unified source of intelligence on startup activity, investment patterns, innovation assets and growth trends across Upstate New York. The platform aggregates company profiles, investor activity, transactions and ecosystem statistics and presents them in an interactive web dashboard at investny.org/ecosystem/dashboard.

Created through a partnership involving Upstate Capital, Empire State Development’s New York Ventures and NYSTAR, the Invest NY platform seeks to address longstanding fragmentation in regional startup data by providing real-time visibility into emerging companies and capital flows across all Upstate regions, from Western New York through the Capital District, Finger Lakes, Hudson Valley and beyond.

Rochester and Buffalo Startup Data

While the Invest NY dashboard itself dynamically loads data in a web interface that reflects current ecosystem activity, external ecosystem studies place Rochester and Buffalo within a broader context of regional startup performance:

  • Rochester’s startup ecosystem is documented to include approximately 163 active startups and has seen measurable growth in recent years. External analysis from StartupBlink shows total startup funding in the Rochester area at more than $42 million, reflecting venture and angel activity tied to local innovation assets, advanced manufacturing and deep tech sectors.

  • Buffalo’s innovation ecosystem similarly supports a significant cohort of early-stage companies, with data from independent ecosystem rankings reporting roughly 139 active startups and total reported funding north of $197 million. Buffalo’s startup environment benefits from prominent programs such as 43North and other capital initiatives aimed at high-growth ventures.

These regional figures underscore the relative scale of Upstate New York ecosystems in cities outside New York City, where statewide startup activity includes nearly 12,000 total startups and more than $37 billion in annual funding.

Ecosystem Utility and Stakeholder Benefits

Invest NY is structured to serve multiple use cases. Founders can claim and update company profiles to signal hiring and fundraising intentions. Investors can surface deal flow, identify co-investment partners and track capital deployment across sectors and regions. Economic developers and policymakers can benchmark performance and monitor longitudinal trends to inform strategy, partnerships and resource allocation.

The platform draws on a combination of public web sources, contributions from ecosystem partners and proprietary databases to create a comprehensive and continuously updated picture of Upstate New York’s innovation economy. Investors, founders and community leaders are encouraged to explore the dashboard and contribute data to enhance the collective insight available to all ecosystem participants.
