Bishop Kearney High School Plans Transformational Athletic and Wellness Complex

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Bishop Kearney High School has announced plans to develop a multi-use athletic and wellness complex aimed at expanding student opportunity, strengthening campus life, and supporting the school’s long-term growth.

The proposed project will include a new on-campus ice rink, athletic facilities, and dedicated training and wellness space designed to serve a wide range of student needs, from physical education and team sports to strength training, fitness, and health-focused academic programming.

School leaders describe the initiative as a significant investment in student development and overall wellness.

“This project is about investing in every Bishop Kearney student,” said Paul Colontino, President of Bishop Kearney. “Our vision is to create a campus environment that supports student wellness, fosters participation across multiple sports and disciplines, and provides the resources needed to help students grow, compete, and succeed.”

The development will be executed in phases, beginning with foundational improvements that are already in active planning. Future components, including expanded training, fitness, and multi-use athletic space, will scale as philanthropic support grows through a forthcoming capital campaign.

Our goal is to create a space that benefits the entire student body,” said Brendan Tydings, Chair of the Bishop Kearney Board of Trustees. “It’s about creating opportunities for more students to engage in athletics, develop healthy habits, and be part of a thriving school community.

The announcement builds on Bishop Kearney’s established reputation as a national leader in youth hockey development. The school’s Selects Academy program has become a recognized pipeline to elite collegiate and professional play. Notably, a number of women who attended Bishop Kearney were members of this year’s U.S. Olympic women’s hockey team, underscoring the school’s influence on the national stage.

An on-campus ice rink is expected to further strengthen that pipeline while also expanding access for the broader student population. Leaders emphasized that the complex is designed not solely for elite athletes, but as an integrated campus resource supporting physical health, performance science, and student engagement across disciplines.

Year-round access to athletic and wellness facilities is anticipated to enhance Bishop Kearney’s value proposition for current families while attracting prospective students seeking a balanced academic and athletic environment.

The project will be funded through philanthropic support, and the school is actively seeking donors to help realize the full vision. Naming opportunities and additional sponsorship details will be released as the capital campaign progresses.

Construction timelines will be finalized following additional planning and fundraising milestones. School officials said updates will be shared with the community as the initiative advances.

If completed as envisioned, the new athletic and wellness complex would represent one of the most significant campus investments in the school’s recent history, reinforcing Bishop Kearney’s dual commitment to academic excellence and high-performance athletics while broadening access to wellness resources for all students.
