Luminate Offers Deep Tech Startups a Shot at $1 Million in Funding

November 5, 2026By Connected KnowAll cities

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Luminate, one of the world's largest accelerators focused on optics, photonics, imaging and laser technologies (OPI+L), has opened applications for its 10th cohort, offering early-stage startups access to investment capital, industry expertise and commercialization resources.

The Rochester-based accelerator invests $3 million annually in emerging technology companies developing solutions across industries, including health care, manufacturing, aerospace, energy and advanced computing.

Applications for Cohort 10 are open through Jan. 11, 2027, with selected companies eligible to receive an initial investment of up to $100,000 and compete for up to $1 million in follow-on funding.

Supporting the Next Generation of Deep Tech Companies

Luminate's hybrid accelerator program is designed to help startups move from technology development to commercialization by connecting founders with the capital, expertise and industry relationships needed to scale.

Participating companies gain access to:

  • Investment capital: Up to $100,000 in initial funding, with an opportunity to compete for up to $1 million in additional investment.
  • Investor connections: Introductions to more than 30 investors and potential funding partners.
  • Industry expertise: Mentorship tailored to each company's business and technology needs, supported by an established advisory board.
  • Technical resources: Access to co-working space, laboratory facilities and specialized optics and laser support.
  • Commercialization support: Connections to a global optics and photonics supply chain, potential customers and strategic industry partners.

The hybrid format allows companies to participate while maintaining operations in their existing markets.

But developing and commercializing deep technology presents challenges that traditional startup programs may not be equipped to address.

"Deep-tech startups face an uphill climb, with long development cycles and technical risks making them half as likely to survive past the seed stage. Luminate was created to change that statistic," said Veronica LoCurcio, director of operations and partnerships at NextCorps Luminate.

"By pairing capital and investor connections with specialized manufacturing guidance and access to world-class regional infrastructure like Rochester and the Finger Lakes optics, photonics, and imaging ecosystem, the NSF STELLAR Engine for laser innovation, and the SMART I-Corridor, we help founders cross the hardware chasm. Having 85 percent of our portfolio still active and scaling proves that when physical hardware innovators receive targeted, industry-specific support instead of generic advice, they can consistently beat the survival odds."luminate venture capital in rochester

Why Rochester?

Rochester has a long history as a center for optics, imaging and photonics innovation, supported by research institutions, established manufacturers and a growing network of technology startups.

The region's concentration of technical talent, research capabilities and specialized manufacturing infrastructure provides an ecosystem for companies developing advanced optical technologies.

Through Luminate, early-stage companies can tap into that network while building relationships with investors and industry leaders beyond Western New York.

The accelerator also plays a role in strengthening Rochester's position in the global deep technology economy by attracting emerging companies and supporting the commercialization of new technologies.

Applications Open Through Jan. 11

Luminate is seeking early-stage startups developing technologies involving optics, photonics, imaging or lasers, including companies applying these capabilities to products and solutions across multiple industries.

Founders interested in joining Cohort 10 can apply through Luminate's website.

The accelerator is also hosting information sessions for companies interested in learning more about the program, investment opportunities and application process.

Application deadline: Jan. 11, 2027.
